Obituary of Carlo C. Segreto

 

 

Carlo Segreto, 82, passed away at home on January 1, 2018.  Loving husband, father, and grandfather, he was predeceased by Frances, his wife of 59 years in 2015, his daughter Ginny in 1960, and his daughter Rachel in 2007,he was also predeceased by his sisters Marie and Rosie.  He was born in Hoboken, NJ, April 14, 1935, and in 1966 moved to Jersey City; to Lakewood, NJ in 1972; and lastly to Brick, NJ in 1996.  He was a popular professional wrestler in the late 1950s-early 60s, and was most well known under the pseudonym of Carlo Milano, but also wrestled as Carlo Caruso, Johnny Roberts, and Peter Demetrius.  He retired from wrestling in 1964 so that he could be at home with his family.  He began attending night school and continued to do so for ten years, earning his degree in Industrial Arts from Kean College.  He taught in the Jersey City school system for over 25 years, and in 1994 was honored by the Hudson County Dept. of Education for his years of teaching service.  During that time he coached youth ice hockey, and was one of the head referees who trained many referees in NJ throughout the 1970s.  He went on to coach high school sports at Academic H.S. in Jersey City, serving as head coach of girls softball (1983-94); boys bowling (1984-94); and girls bowling (1984-88).  He also coached ice hockey at Madison H.S., and Hanover Park H.S.  In 1995 he was honored by the N.J. Interscholastic Athletic Association for his years of coaching service. In 1994 he returned to the ice to coach the beginners at the Toms River Hockey Club, and from 2000 to 2005 he provided his help in any way he could, most notably as scorekeeper, for the Monsignor Donovan H.S. ice hockey team.

He is survived by his loving family:  son Frank, daughter-in-law Carolyn, and grandsons Luke and Paul; son-in-law Mike Moriarty, grandchildren Autumn and Anthony, and three great grandchildren,three sisters, four brothers and their families and numerous cousins and friends. His family brought him great joy, and in his later years he could have always been seen at Luke’s hockey games, and at Paul’s tennis matches.

Carlo made it clear that he did not want a viewing.  A mass in his honor will be held at St. Justin’s Church, Fisher Blvd., Toms River on Saturday, January 6, 9:30AM.
