Oliver W. Groh, age 93, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick. Oliver was born in Madison, NJ on April 23, 1923-one of eight children born to the late Carl F. Groh and Mary Brown. After graduating from Madison High School, Oliver served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a battalion engineer and staff sergeant with the 290th Combat Engineer Battalion in Europe from October 1944-March 1946. Upon his return from the service, he attended Pace College in New York City and graduated with a CPA degree. He worked as a controller for Durkee Foods Frozen Food Division, and later he worked for General Spice. Oliver lived for many years in Basking Ridge, NJ and raised two daughters with his late wife Patricia Meyer. In 1977, Oliver married Madeline Moore of Chatham, NJ. After his retirement, he and Madeline moved to Norwich, VT in 2000. He was actively involved with the 290th Combat Engineers Reunion Committee. With Madeline, he was a member of the Hartford Alumni Association, and they were both active members of the White River Junction Methodist Church. He enjoyed golf, gardening, woodworking, and traveling. Oliver was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Patricia Ann Meyer; his sister, Mary Porter; three brothers, Edward of FL, Ferdinand of Tucson, AZ, and Carl of Miami Springs; a stepson, Craig Martin Pinter; his wife, Madeline Moore; and his daughter, Carol Groh-Viscione. He is survived by his daughter, Joan Groh of Bayville, NJ and her significant other, Marcus McManus; a stepdaughter, Dale Ross of Wharton, NJ; three brothers, Peter of Toms River, NJ, Philip of Flagler Beach, FL, and William of Manahawkin, NJ. Oliver also left behind seven grandchildren; Gena Viscione, Eugene Viscione, Kara Pfeiffer, Christina Prazak, Martin Pinter, Tiffany Slaton, And Jason Ross; nine great-grandchildren; many dear nieces, nephews, and friends; and his beloved cat, Fluffy. Oliver’s request was to be cremated and buried beside his wife Madeline. A graveside service will be held later in the spring at the Upper Hilltop Cemetery in Quechee, Vermont.
