Joseph Michael Campo, Jr. Obituary
Joseph Michael Campo Jr., lovingly known to many as Joe or Mickey, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026.
Born on January 25, 1949, in Trenton, NJ, Joe spent the early years of his life there before eventually settling in Lavallette, where he enjoyed most of his years near the shore.
Joe dedicated his life to the culinary world and was a chef for restaurant guests, but also his family. He proudly served as Executive Chef at their family-owned restaurant, Joe Campo’s in Trenton. They lived above the restaurant as a family, where Joe’s love for cooking, hospitality, and family was woven into everyday life. Working side by side, they helped build a beloved local establishment known for great food and warm hospitality. After relocating to the Jersey Shore, Joe fulfilled another dream by opening Campo’s Oceanside in Point Pleasant, where family remained at the center of everything he did. His wife and children worked alongside him as host and wait staff and created memories that would last a lifetime. Joe continued his culinary career at several other restaurants before eventually retiring after decades of hard work and dedication to his craft. Following retirement, he continued to cook amazing meals for the people he loved, leaving favorited recipes behind for his family to continue his legacy.
Joe was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Judi Campo for 56 years; a loving father to his surviving son, Joey Campo; and a proud father to his late daughter, Gina Kwortnik, whom he carried forever in his heart. Mickey was an older brother to predeceased Marie Magnier, who remained close all their lives. He was also a cherished grandfather (“Papa”) to Victoria Kwortnik and Evan Kwortnik, who brought him endless pride and joy.
A heart transplant survivor for nearly 25 years, Joe faced life with resilience, gratitude, and strength. He appreciated every moment and every extra year he was given, inspiring those around him with his determination and spirit.
Outside the kitchen, Joe enjoyed cheering on the New York Yankees and was a lifelong fan of Star Wars, never missing a chance to share his love of the saga with his children especially.
Joe will be remembered for his passion for cooking, his unwavering love for his family, his sense of humor, and the kindness he extended to everyone who knew him. His legacy lives on through the family he adored, the meals he prepared with love, and the countless lives he touched throughout the years.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Pio of Pietrelcina on 103 Washington Ave, Lavallette, NJ 08735, at 10am on Friday, May 15th.
