A Complete Understanding of Cremation Pricing

Funeral and cremation pricing can be difficult to understand, particularly when you are grieving so it is important to understand what you are looking at before you make plans. You can separate this into 3 basic categories including: the service, cash advances and additional extras. Avoid spending more than you need to by making sure you read up on what actually needs to be paid for;

The Service

A funeral service will require a basic fee, which will include dealing with permits, storing remains, co-ordinating with third parties including the cemetery or crematorium, among other things. For cremation and burial services, they tend to be a flat amount that is part of a package regardless of arrangements that you decide on although some elements could change the price and this includes:

  • Direct burial or cremations
  • If the funeral home is only responsible for receiving or forwarding on the remains.

Cash Advances

This is the fee that will be charged for goods and services the funeral organises on your behalf, which could range from the clergy and crematory charges to flowers and obituaries. Funeral homes are required to be transparent in this regard, particularly if they receive discounts or refunds from suppliers.

Additional Extras

Depending on your preferences, goods and services could include transportation, chapels, cosmetic preparation, caskets or urns. It is important to also note that while the Federal Trade Commission does not allow funeral homes to charge you for services you benefit from indirectly, there are some instances that you will have to purchase additional services to get something you would like. A good example of this is that in many cases, if you want a viewing or visitation, many funeral homes will require embalming, which is an additional extra.
