Many people aren’t too sure about how they can help their friend who has lost a loved one, through the grieving process and end up making mistakes. Here are some tips that can help:

  1. Go with the flow - Every person reacts differently to grief. While some people prefer to be left alone, others are more vocal and need to express what they feel. If you are consoling a friend, you need to understand what the person needs and what will work for him or her.

  2. Listening helps - More often than not, a person who is grieving just needs someone to talk to. At times like this, the best thing to do is to lend a patient ear and make sure that you give them the opportunity to say everything they need to before you interject or trying to console them.

  3. Be patient – You can’t hurry the grieving process and most people take a long time to get over their loss. You should be there for your friend when you can and let them take their time when they are trying to come to terms with their loss.

  4. Be aware of warning signs - Sometimes, people that are grieving the death of a loved one get depressed, can’t sleep, lose their appetite etc. It's important to be on the lookout for signs like these and help curb them before they get out of hand.

  5. Allow the person to cry - When we are consoling someone, it's very common for us to tell the person not to cry. In fact, this is something we shouldn’t be doing. Tears are a way of expressing grief and it’s best to let the person cry rather than allow all the sorrow to remain pent up inside.
