What do Funeral Directors do for a Family?

When a family member passes away, one of the very first things you need to do is to visit a funeral home and discuss your requirements for the service with the funeral director. These professionals will be able to help you with all the information and guidance you need about planning a funeral service for your loved one. Most people wonder exactly what a funeral director’s duties are. Here we take a look at what they do (but are not limited to) for a family:

  • Make the transportation arrangements for the mortal remains of the deceased.
  • Prepare the floors and remains and provide embalming services if required.
  • If you are applying for veteran’s funeral benefits, funeral directors may be able to help you with that aspect as well.
  • They may be able to help with resolving insurance claims on your behalf.
  • Handle all the legal documentation and paperwork such as sending the death certificate to the state officials.
  • Have detailed discussions with the family of the deceased individual, in order to get an idea about what their specific preferences for the service are.
  • They will help with arrangements such as establishing the timing, date & location for the memorial service, the burial as well as the wake.
  • The funeral director will manage all the logistics of the service so that you can manage the other aspects in a stress-free manner.
  • If repatriation is required, they will help with this service too.

Aside from all these services, the funeral director will be responsible for handling aspects such as helping the family determine whether they needed to cremate or bury the body. The funeral director needs to have a very good understanding of different cultures, in order to offer the best services to their clients.

To make an appointment with one of our directors to talk about making arrangements or to learn more about our services, contact us at Ocean County Cremation Service by phone at 800-390-1941 or though our online form. We’ll be happy to help.
