Choosing An Urn

Collecting the remains after cremating a body, is an important part of the funeral process. Most people use urns to store the ashes in a proper way. When choosing an urn, keep these aspects in view:

1. Size Of The Urn

The funeral home or the crematorium would be able to give you a good estimate of the size of the urn. Considering that the weight of ashes would range between 3-7 pounds, the required capacity of the urn would be 180-220 cubic inches. Do check the urn size specifications with the establishment, if you are considering placing the urn in a columbarium in the cemetery.

2. Care About The Aesthetics

If you plan to store the ashes at home in an urn, the appearance of the piece is important. The aesthetic aspect matters because you can then choose an urn that depicts religious motifs, sports or hobbies to give it a distinctive look.

3. Quality Is Important

When you finalize your choice of the urn, give some thought to its quality. A wide range of materials are used in making urns such as glass, marble, ceramic, granite and metals like brass, copper, bronze. Some prefer wooden urns though they may not be as durable as others.

In a situation where you have to transport or carry the urn by air, it is better to use materials like glass, cardboard, plastic or cloth as they are easy to run through an x-ray machine. If you have a budget, it is useful to look at the price ranges so you find a piece that fits into it.
