How Can I Explain The Concept of Death to my Children?

A discussion about death is very challenging. If kids are in the picture, talking to them about it can be even more so. When there is a death in the family, children are naturally curious to know what has happened and why. This can make it very difficult for parents or any other adults to explain things to them without making them anxious or scared. Here are a few tips to help you explain the concept of death to your children.

1. Maintain Clarity

It’s necessary to be precise while having this discussion as that will help children grasp the concept in a better way. Most parents underestimate their children’s ability to grasp a concept like death. When they are having a conversation related to it, they tend to be more euphemistic and unclear. You can keep it simple and tell them that the person has stopped breathing and that they will not return.

2. Dedicate some time

Never hurry this conversation with your children. Set some time aside when you want to talk to kids about death and make sure that you give them some real-life examples about it too. It’s the best way to cover everything that needs to be discussed. It will help them get a better understanding of what death is and what it means.

3. Have the conversation sooner than later

If you wait to talk to your child about death until someone actually passes away, that may not be the right time at all. At that point, the child may be distressed and upset and having a talk at then will not serve the purpose. You can take the opportunity to explain the concept of death to children when some public figure or a celebrity passes away.
