How to Help a Friend Through the Grieving Process

When a friend loses a loved one, it can be difficult to find ways to help them through the grief. Many friends feel like they don’t do enough and are left floundering or uncertain. At Ocean County Cremation Service, we believe that friends are an invaluable part of a person's support group. You may be able to do more for the grieving individual than their own family. Here are a few tips that can help:

1. Offer Honest Support

It is easy to say ‘call me anytime’ but difficult to fulfill that promise. Instead of providing generic reassurances, give your friend something concrete. Tell them that you’ll set aside 15 to 30 minutes every day or a couple of hours every weekend solely for them. This gives your friend a chance to reach out without feeling guilty. They know you have set aside some time for them and they’re not imposing on you.

2. Understand What They Need

Different people have different ways of dealing with grief. Some want to reach out to friends and family while others want privacy. Take time to understand what your friend wants and plan your approach accordingly. You can ask them directly if they want your company if needed. Keeping communication lines open and honest can help.

3. Offer Practical Support

Grief can be overwhelming and some people forget to eat or sleep during this time. Offer practical support by giving your friend some home-cooked meals or babysitting their children to give them a break. Small things like assisting with household chores, doing grocery shopping for them, etc, can help them feel better and allow them from freedom to grieve.

If you want to know more or want to arrange for a service, contact us at Ocean County Cremation Service today. We’ll be happy to help.
