Obituary of Robert T Dutter

Robert T. Dutter, formerly of Maplewood, NJ, died Sunday, June 10, 2018, at his home in Waretown, NJ. Mr. Dutter was born Nov. 15, 1926, in Newark, NJ. He is survived by his wife, Marie, sons Tom and Greg, and daughter, Alison Federico-Thomas; grandchildren Darby Dutter; Jake, Lisa, Julie and Robert Federico; and Kensey and Kody Phipps. He was predeceased by his son John. Nearly a lifelong resident of Maplewood, Mr. Dutter was a graduate of Seth Boyden Elementary School, Maplewood Junior High School and Columbia High School. He served in the U.S. Army, studying engineering at the University of Kentucky and St. Bonaventure University. After receiving an honorable discharge, Mr. Dutter earned a degree in architecture from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and embarked on a successful career spanning six-plus decades, first with Milton Klein & Associates and then his own firm in Maplewood. He designed homes, schools, office buildings, and restaurants throughout the metropolitan area as well as the former Maplewood Police Station on Dunnell Rd. Mr. Dutter served as chairman of the Maplewood Township Planning Board for 12 years, was an active parishioner in The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in South Orange, for which he planned the renovations to the lower level of the church and relocation of the parish offices. He was a former member of numerous local civic and professional organizations. A voracious reader, he enjoyed traveling the world with his wife of 63 years, rooting for his beloved Baltimore Orioles every season, painting and sketching during his retirement, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating Mr. Dutter’s life will be held at The Our Lady of Sorrows Church at a date to be determined.
