Obituary of Kathleen Winton

Please share a memory of Kathleen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mrs. Kathleen (Kate) Elizabeth Jean Winton, daughter of the late Jean and William Crielman was born on May 30, 1934 in Orange, New Jersey. She grew up in West Orange, graduating from West Orange High School and then completed her education at Berkeley Secretarial College. In 1955, she married George Robert Winton, Jr., who proudly served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Even after his death on February 6, 2008, she proudly displayed the Marine Corps. Flag outside their home in Barnegat, NJ. She lovingly referred to him as “blue eyes” and often spoke of how handsome he was the first time she met him in uniform.

In 1969, Kate and George moved from West Orange to Columbia, NJ to raise their family. Kate was a secretary at Knowlton Township Elementary School and the Belvidere school district and diligently took the Board of Education minutes for several years. She then worked for the Warren County Department of Human Services retiring in 1999. She was always a proud mother and engaged in her children’s sports and other activities while they were growing up. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid sewer and for years displayed her annual holiday crafts at local craft shows. In 1999, she and her husband George were able to fulfill their dream of living by the Jersey Shore and permanently retired to Barnegat, NJ. She loved traveling with her community to see Broadway plays, visiting with neighbors and lunches with her “Curves” friends. She loved eating out at restaurants and spending time with family.

Kate was known for her beautiful handmade quilts affectionately tagged “Made With Tender Loving Care by Granny Winton” which will forever be cherished by those who received them. She supplied quilts to family, friends, neonatal units of local hospitals, veterans organizations and a local Barnegat outreach organization. She enjoyed her volunteer work at Southern Ocean County Hospital where she helped with paperwork for the same day surgery unit. She was an avid reader her whole life and even after she could no longer drive, she appreciated the Ocean County Barnegat Branch library for continuing to deliver her books.

Affectionately addressed as “Granny” she will be greatly missed by her 4 children, Cindy, George, Betsy and Kate and her 7 grandchildren, Jenny, Megan, Winton, Amanda, Allison, Jordan, and Andrew. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life and she loved to hear about their interests, school, friends and activities. Her family and friends will forever remember her for her contagious laughter and love for life.
