Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles “Corky” Mitchell Hovey Jr. died at his home October 26, 2016. He was 86. Corky was born on August 16, 1930 in Utica, NY. He was the son of Charles Mitchell Hovey, Sr. and Henrietta Schoolcraft Sherman. His maternal great grandfather was James Schoolcraft Sherman, Vice President of the United States during the William Taft administration from 1908-1912. He is also a direct descendant of John Howland, who came to America on the Mayflower. Corky married his beloved “archangel”Jane Ellen Richardi on April 19, 1969. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Douglas Charles Hovey (Erin Eileen Burke), and his two grandchildren, Fiona Colleen Hovey and Cade Charles Hovey. Corky was preceded in death by both of his parents, his son Will “Billy” Hovey and his siblings Will Whiting Hovey II, Mary Elizabeth Hovey and Ann Hovey Kuyk. Corky was a graduate of The Choate School located in Wallingford, CT. At Choate he excelled in several sports particularly baseball and football. On the football field he was described as “a combination of Red Grange and Bronko Nagurski”. Injuries cut his athletic career short, but his passion for sports was never ending. If he wasn’t cheering on his son or grandchildren on the court or field, he was watching everything and anything sports-related. After Choate, Corky attended Iowa State University and Bentley University receiving a degree in Accounting. Corky and his family moved to Linwood in 1987, where he was a successful wine and liquor salesman for many years in the area until he retired at the age of 83. The family would like to pass on it’s appreciation to Holy Redeemer Hospice care, especially Jay and Liz, for their amazing support over the last year. Also thank you to Corky’s “guardian angel” Janet Speelman as well as Marie D’Amato and countless other friends and family for their tireless love and support. A funeral service will be held Friday November 4th at Our Lady of Sorrows (724 Maple Ave Linwood, NJ) starting at 11am. Visitation with the family will take place starting at 10am. In lieu of flowers contribution in Corky’s memory can be made to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Division of Gastroenterology. Please designate funds to “Liver Transplant Research - Rand”
