Oscar C McGinnis, Sr. Obituary

Oscar C. McGinnis, Sr. began his life’s journey on May 10, 1927, and peacefully departed this life at home on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at the age of 95.  He was born to the late Andy and Sally McGinnis of Frisco City, Alabama. 

 

In his early years of life, he joined and proudly served in the United States Armed Services.  He served for a culmination of 21 years in the Army Active duty, Reserve and National Guard.  He is a decorated Sergeant who earned numerous medals, including a purple heart for his bravery during his time of service.   

 

As a civilian, He served as a Volunteer fireman for the Mount Tabor Fire Department. He worked as head cook at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital and security for Morris View Nursing Home.  He retired after 30 years of service.  He loved working in security so even after his retirement, he settled in the Wildwood/Cape May area and continued to work security at Nilsen Detective Agency. 

 

Oscar was full of life!  He loved to surround himself with family and friends.  He loved to laugh, hang out in Atlantic City and relax on the beach in Cape May.  All who knew him loved to hear stories of his time in the service.  Oscar had a talent for picking up different languages of the places he was stationed during his time overseas.  Oscar spoke both Korean and German fluently.  

 

He is preceded in death by one daughter, Tracey McGinnis, two brothers, Robert McGinnis and

Cleveland McGinnis, four sisters Clara Bell Brooks, Addie Lee Parker, Irene Stallworth, Willie Mae Deeds. 

 


He leaves to cherish his memory, 5 children and 2 step children-  Oscar C McGinnis Jr. of

Portland, Oregon,  Edna McGinnis of Columbus, Georgia, Gregory McGinnis of California, Torin

McGinnis, Germany, Renee McGinnis of Kendall Park, New Jersey, Debora Ducksworth

(Wayne) of Stamford, Connecticut,  and Charles A. Monroe, (Donna) of Flanders, New Jersey,

One brother, Gene McGinnis (Myrtle ), of Frisco City, Alabama, Son-in-law, Robert Brown of

Maplewood, New Jersey, two devoted nieces: Betty Stanley, Frisco City, Alabama, Sandra

Watkins, Hinesville, Georgia, Long-time companion, Pam Reynolds, Orange, New Jersey,

Loving cousin Joyce Soto (John) of Pass Christian, Mississippi, Special recognition of Cheryl McGinnis (Joseph Witherspoon) of Union City, Georgia, and a host of loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. 

 

The Memorial Service will be held at 

Washington Crossing National Cemetery  

830 Highland Rd, Newtown, PA 18940 

10:30am- service will last 20 mins and a repass will follow.
