Marianne T Hurley Obituary

Marianne Hurley (Rowe) passed away on November 13, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 10, 1944, in the Bronx, New York, to Thomas and Teresa Rowe (O’Hanlon). Marianne was a first-generation American who grew up in a vibrant Irish Catholic neighborhood in the Bronx. She attended St. Simon Stock High School.

After graduating, Marianne attended a trade school to become a secretary and began her career in New York City at IBM, where she worked throughout the 1960s. She met her future husband, Michael Hurley, through her brother John Rowe, who had served in the military with Michael. The two were inseparable from the moment they met and were married on November 26, 1966.

After their marriage, Marianne worked as a school bus driver in Mount Olive, New Jersey, while raising their two children, Kahlie and Timothy. In 1976, Marianne and Michael purchased a beach house on Tebco Drive in Holgate, Long Beach Island (LBI), where they fell in love with the area’s charm. As they neared retirement, they embarked on a new adventure by purchasing Garrison’s Motel in 1995 that then was renamed Hurley’s Motel. By 2003, they became year-round residents of LBI.

Marianne had a passion for traveling and often pulled Michael along on adventures across the country and around the world. Together, they enjoyed skiing trips in places like Colorado and Vermont and visited destinations such as New Zealand, Normandy, Tahiti, Iceland, and Ireland.

Beyond her love of travel, Marianne was deeply involved in her community and cherished animals. She served as Kahlie’s Girl Scout troop leader in Mount Olive during her children’s younger years and remained active later in life as a dedicated member of the Holgate Taxpayers Association. She had a lifelong love for pets, caring for five German Shepherds and countless cats over the years. Marianne shared a special bond with one of her Maine Coon cat, Willie, who passed away in April of this year.

Marianne had a gift for connecting with people—she could talk to anyone and always had a story to share about her adventures with her brothers, or funny memories from her childhood. She was known for her playful sense of humor and loved pulling pranks on her loved ones. Her fiery red hair was always styled, and she delighted in taking her grandchildren for outings to get their nails done and go shopping. Her kindness and generosity were unmatched.

Marianne is survived by her daughter, Kahlie (Mark Escobedo), her son, Tim (Hope Altman), her brother, Thomas (Siobhan), and her beloved grandchildren Rory, Ellie, Bryn, and Brody. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Hurley; her parents; her brother, John; and her nephew, Frank, who died in Iraq in 2004. She will also be fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, and friends.

While some goodbyes are easier than others, this one is especially difficult and unexpected. Marianne lived a full and extraordinary life, achieving so much of what she set out to do. Please keep her memory close in your thoughts and prayers.

We love you, Marianne.
